It is with great sadness that we pay this tribute to Dave McFarlane; who passed on October 13th, 2025.
Dave was once a respected competitor who became a colleague after McFarlane Amerlee Consulting joined GBL in 2020 – a pivotal year for GBL
Most importantly, Dave was our friend.
Dave graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from McGill University in 1965 and a MBA in corporate finance from the University of Toronto in 1971. Subsequently, he became a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries and a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries.
In 1979, Dave moved to Calgary with the head office relocation of The Sovereign Insurance Group to become the Executive Vice President and Actuary for The Family Life Assurance Group of companies.
In 1993, Dave and Price Waterhouse entered into a joint venture under the name of McFarlane Price Waterhouse Consulting Limited with a primary focus of developing the IPP market in Western Canada.
In April of 1996, McFarlane Amerlee Consulting Limited was established and as of January 1, 2020, McFarlane Amerlee Consulting Limited became part of GBL.
Throughout this, Dave continued to be a leader specializing in the establishment of IPPs as well as providing creative tax effective pension related solutions to Canadians.
Dave also enjoyed playing competitive squash, particularly at the Bow Valley Athletic Club and had represented Canada internationally numerous times.
Dave lived a remarkable life which we are grateful to have been just a small part of. He will be missed; and he and his family are in our thoughts during this difficult time.
